Can solar panels survive hail?

One thing that’s always on people’s minds is whether these panels can survive extreme weather events such as a hailstorm. The answer is…“most likely”! Check out the video below that shows a piece of hail striking a solar panel at roughly 120 kilometres per hour.

However, not all panels are made equal. Researchers have found that panels which use clear silicon material were more likely to be damaged than solar panels covered in acrylic. If you are thinking about getting solar panels for your house or business, you should ask to see the hail impact test data from either the contractor or the solar panel manufacturer. Furthermore, we recommend that you speak with your home insurance company to see if hail damage is covered. As solar panels are not widely adopted yet, the policies between different insurance companies can vary wildly.
