BMW To Introduce Tesla Rival

BMW appears to have had enough of Tesla, and is planning to launch an all-electric version of its popular 3 series sedan.

At this point, BMW has not confirmed their plans. However, the rumor mill has produced the following pieces of information.

  • The all-electric BMW 3 series will be introduced after the next generation gasoline and diesel models. Current speculation points to a 2020 release date for the all-electric variant.
  • The new BMW will be designed to compete directly against the Tesla Model 3.
  • The new BMW is getting tested with a 90kWh battery pack. This should give it a range of around 450 km.

If the fully electric BMW 3 series can have acceleration and frequent software updates similar to the Tesla Model 3, then it will be very interesting to see who becomes the market leader in mass-produced electric vehicles.

Tesla definitely has the advantage when it comes to technological innovation, and it looks like the Tesla Model 3 will beat the electric BMW 3 series to market by a couple of years. However, BMW is legendary for how well their cars handle. In addition, BMW has the experience to produce a large number of cars while Tesla has been struggling recently to meet production targets.

It is important to keep in mind that this is all rumor and speculation at this point. However, as electric cars become more popular it makes sense for companies such as BMW to expand their electric offerings. BMW already produces the i3 electric car, as well as the i8 hybrid.
