Net Metering

Net metering allows consumers to send electricity generated from renewable sources (such as solar) into the local electricity grid for a credit. For example, if you consumed 1,000 kWh and exported 200 kWh in a month you would only be charged for only 800 kWh worth of electricity.

Some net metering programs will pay a premium for power sent back to the grid as an extra incentive for people to install renewable energy systems.
