How do Canada’s sunniest cities stack up against the rest of the world?
Quite well actually! The sunniest city on the planet is Yuma, Arizona (USA) with 4,015 hours of sunshine per year. Germany is the world leader in solar energy, and their sunniest city is Freiburg with only 1,740 hours of sunshine per year. The sunniest city in Canada is Calgary, AB with 2,396 hours of sunshine per year.
While the sunniest Canadian city does not compare well with Yuma, it is over 35% sunnier than the sunniest city in Germany – the global leader in solar power generation that currently gets about 7% of its electricity from solar panels.
What does this mean for Canadian cities? If federal and provincial governments provide incentives similar to the ones in Germany, many Canadian cities will be able to outproduce the sunniest Germany cities when it comes to solar power.
