The LAPD has been piloting the Tesla Model S P85D as a police cruiser.
Tesla has provided two $100,000 USD Model S loaner cars to the LAPD, and they have been in use for nearly a year. The police officers have been impressed with the vehicle’s abilities (especially as a pursuit vehicle), but have brought up some very legitimate concerns for using the Model S as a standard police cruiser.
Some of these concerns include:
- The price tag of $100,000 USD for the Model S. For comparison, the Ford Police Interceptor costs $30,000-$50,000 USD.
- Inability to use the Tesla cruiser in case of a massive power outage. For example, Hurricane Sandy (2012) disabled many charging stations in Manhattan.
- The lack of supercharging stations (though more are getting added every year).
The LAPD has not ruled out using the Tesla Model S as a police cruiser in the future, but that future is at least five years out.
