The Sunforce 100 LED Solar Motion Light is a great option if you are looking for an outdoor solar light, and received a 9/10 in our review.
The team at Solar Consultant reviewed the corner mount version of the Sunforce 100 LED light for 30 days, and would recommend this light to anyone looking for a reliable outdoor solar light. In this review, we will go over the build quality, illumination, battery life, and feature set of this model.
Build Quality. One thing that is immediately apparent as soon as you get your hands on the light is that the build quality is excellent. There are multiple hinges to allow the lights to be adjusted, and they have no issues staying in any of the positions within the range of motion. The hinges have just the right amount of resistance for them to feel sturdy, but not hard to move.
Since the light is meant to be used outdoors, the power cord that connects the solar panel to the light has an o-ring to prevent moisture from entering the power socket. Small details such as this are important in ensuring longevity of the device.
Illumination. The light has a rated output of 1,000 lumens and is impressively bright.
The video below shows our tester activating the light at around 8 PM.
Battery Life. The light is powered by three 1.2V 1500 mAh Ni-MH rechargeable batteries located in the main body, and are included with the solar light. These are the batteries that the solar panel charges during the day. Like all batteries, these AA cells will degrade over time and hold less and less energy. The fact that the batteries are user replaceable is a big plus.
We were able to turn on the light after charging the batteries for 45 minutes on a sunny day via the solar panel. The next day, we let the light charge for a full day and it had no issues making it through the night on the 30 second medium motion detection distance setting. We then unplugged the solar panel from the light so that it couldn’t charge during the day, and it was still able to make it through the next night.
Our only complaint with the battery is that they are Ni-MH and not lithium-ion. Ni-MH is a good battery chemistry, but it does tend to “self-discharge” at 2x-3x the rate of lithium-ion batteries. This could make a big difference in geographies that can are cloudy for weeks at a time.
Features. This outdoor solar light comes with all of the basic features you need. There is a motion sensing mode, and a continuous “on” mode. When in motion sensing mode, the light allows you to select 30s, 60s, and 120s illumination durations. The light also allows you to adjust the motion sensing distance from low, medium, to high. The maximum detection distance is around 30 ft.
One feature we would like to see added is “low light activation”. This would mean that motion sensing activation is disabled during the day.
Overall, the Sunforce 100 LED Solar Motion Light is an excellent outdoor solar light.
